Years ago, it was uncommon to see supernatural things. Only rarely did Shades, Wraiths, and the occasional once-in-a-blue-moon Eidolon slip through Reaper's fingers. But when that does happen, humans have to step in to sort the mess. Dante is a human paranormal investigator and a medium, being able to talk to spirits and the like. During an investigation into violent possessions and poltergeists in the area, he met Barbara, a reaper who was also there for the same reason. Even after their encounter, they kept in touch.
Thus Barbara became a member of the Cruz family, and Dante got more insight to the world of Reapers.
